There are some locations on the Gold Coast that feel like they've been pulled straight from a storybook. Cougal Cascades is one of them. Tucked away in the lush rainforest of the Currumbin Valley, Cougal Cascades offers crystal-clear water, ancient rock formations, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busy coastline. Located within the Mount Cougal section of Springbrook National Park, the area is known for its cascading rock pools, subtropical rainforest, and scenic walking tracks.  For this shoot, I wanted to create something soft, natural, and almost cinematic. The flowing white dress contrasted beautifully against the dark rocks and deep rainforest tones, creating a scene that felt both elegant and connected to nature.

Why Cougal Cascades Works So Well for Photography

One of the things I love most about photographing at Cougal Cascades is the variety it offers within a relatively small area. The dark volcanic rocks create natural leading lines, the flowing water adds movement, and the surrounding rainforest acts like a giant natural backdrop. Depending on the weather and time of day, the location can feel moody and dramatic or soft and ethereal. The filtered light through the trees creates pockets of illumination that can be used creatively for portraits. Instead of harsh sunlight, you're often working with gentle, diffused light that flatters skin tones and helps create a more cinematic feel.

The Creative Vision

For this session, the goal wasn't simply to take portraits. I wanted the images to feel as though Courtney belonged within the environment rather than standing in front of it. The white dress brought a sense of softness against the darker landscape, while the natural textures of the rocks and water added depth and contrast. Rather than fighting the environment, we embraced it. The result was a collection of images that felt organic, calm, and connected to the landscape around us.

Tips for Models Shooting at Cougal Cascades

If you're planning a photoshoot in a location like this, there are a few things worth considering:

  •     Wear footwear that can easily be removed and carried.
  •     Be prepared to walk across uneven rocks.
  •     Flowing fabrics tend to photograph beautifully against the water and rainforest backdrop.
  •     Bring a towel and a change of clothes, even if you don't plan on getting wet.
  •     Arrive with enough time to explore the location before shooting.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to interact with the environment. Some of the strongest images often happen between poses when you're simply responding naturally to the space around you.

Tips for Photographers

Cougal Cascades is beautiful, but it does present a few challenges. The contrast between dark water and bright highlights can be tricky, especially when photographing people in lighter clothing. Exposing carefully for skin tones while protecting highlights is key. I didn't use flash for these, but it can certainly elevate your photos if you do and present a different vibe.

I also recommend:

  • Shooting during overcast conditions or later in the afternoon.
  • Looking for natural framing elements like trees and branches.
  • Using longer focal lengths to compress the background and isolate your subject.
  • Incorporating the water reflections where possible.
  • If you have an assistant or the model brings a friend, incorporate a reflector or use an on or off camera flash to fill in shadows.

The location rewards patience. Sometimes the best compositions appear after you've spent time observing how the light moves through the rainforest.

More Than Just a Photoshoot

One of the reasons I enjoy photographing in places like Cougal Cascades is that they encourage people to slow down. The sound of flowing water, the cool air beneath the rainforest canopy, and the natural textures all help create an experience rather than just a photoshoot. When people look back at their images, I want them to remember how the location felt, not just how it looked. And that's exactly what made this session special.
